Here's a sentence I've typed more times than I want to admit: "knauf insulation 100mm." It looks like a complete specification. It is not. It's a brand plus a dimension, which is about as useful as telling a carpenter "wood, two meters." I found that out the expensive way.
I'm a project lead at a commercial insulation contractor, handling orders for steel-frame walls, metal buildings, and acoustic ceilings. I've been in this seat for six years. Each has a different density, which drives its thermal performance, fire rating, and acoustic behavior. Each can come unfaced, kraft-faced, or foil-faced. The name on the label stays the same. The 100mm number stays the same. What changes is the technical data sheet — and the technical data sheet is the only part that matters once the pallet is opened on site.
I assumed "same brand, same thickness" meant I had specified everything that mattered. Didn't verify. Turned out the wall design needed a high-density board with a specific fire rating, and what I'd ordered was a standard semi-rigid batt. Both were 100mm. Both were perfectly good insulation. One was legal in that wall. One was not.
The foil-and-tool detail hiding in plain sight
The second thing I missed was install-level detail — specifically, how foil-faced boards are meant to be cut. On a condensation-control project, the foil facing is the vapor check. It's not decoration. If the edge gets crushed or crinkled, the vapor barrier breaks at every joint, and the whole detail fails.
Everything I'd read about cutting foil-faced insulation said a sharp utility knife is fine. In practice, on a metal building with a condensation-control detail, it was not fine. The manufacturer's install guide called for scoring the foil with a foil shaver and snapping the board clean. A foil shaver costs about $18. Mistake 3: The color tile ceiling (November 2023)
School renovation. The finish schedule specified color tiles in the corridors and two open learning rooms — acoustic ceiling panels with a factory color finish. I looked at "suspended ceiling with tile finish" and ordered a standard glass mineral wool roll for the void above, because I assumed the tiles were doing the acoustic work. They weren't. The Checklist That Finally Stuck

Five minutes of verification beats five days of correction. Every time.
- Start with the drawing, not your memory. Open the actual wall, ceiling, or roof detail and read the insulation callout on its own.
- Match the product line. Roll, semi-rigid batt, rigid board, or loose-fill blown insulation. A thickness value doesn't answer this.
- Confirm the thickness in millimeters against the drawing, and check whether the drawing references finished or nominal thickness.
- Confirm the density and performance grade. This is where thermal, fire, and acoustic performance actually live.
- Confirm the facing. Unfaced, kraft, or foil. If foil is part of a vapor control detail, move to #6.
- Put a foil shaver on the tool list whenever foil-faced board is specified. It will be the least expensive item on the BOM and possibly the most important.
- Check the acoustic data for ceiling systems with tiles or panels. The αw or NRC value should match the acoustician's model, not your assumption.
- Verify the product name is current. Products get renamed and reorganized; last year's datasheet doesn't always match this year's order code.
- Quote only claims you can substantiate. Per the FTC's Green Guides (ftc.gov), environmental claims need to be truthful, not misleading, and backed by evidence. We cite Knauf's published Ecose data instead of inventing our own adjectives.
- Check quantity, address, and label. Have the foreman confirm the product labels at the gate — the count first, then the name, then the spec.
- Store it right. Boards and batts stay flat, dry, and off the concrete floor. A 100mm product that's absorbed moisture isn't that product anymore.
- Hold a two-minute crew talk. Point at the material, point at the location, and say the spec out loud. If nobody can repeat it, the order isn't done yet.
The list is the same one I now use on every Knauf Insulation Inc order — and I do mean every one. The errors it caught cost nothing to catch and would have cost something real to miss. That's the whole point. A checklist isn't paperwork. It's the insurance policy that pays for itself.
Your first 100mm spec might be perfect. Mine wasn't. Check the sheet, check the delivery, check the storage, and have the crew tell you what they're installing. It takes five minutes. The rework it prevents takes weeks.
