Last November, my brother-in-law called me about his 1928 house in Rochester, New York. He wanted to finish the attic before the holidays and had already put down a deposit on a truckload of Knauf Insulation. The lesson
Everything I'd read about attic insulation called it a fairly straightforward job: rent a blower, set the depth, go. In practice, the product itself was easy. The hard part is what you check before you start.
If I could hand out one checklist, it would be this:
- Verify the coverage chart against your actual joist spacing, not just square footage.
- Check the soffit vents and roof deck for moisture before you cover anything.
- Fix chipped paint and air leaks before insulating, not after.
- If a crew lead shrugs off the prep, treat that as a bigger warning than any bad review.
That is the prevention-over-cure lesson I've carried since my first rejected batch back in 2022. A twenty-minute inspection saved my brother-in-law a roof deck replacement and a ruined sewing room. He paid an extra $650 for the vent repair and the delay, which hurt at the time. But the alternative would have cost several thousand dollars and a winter of mold. 5 minutes of verification beats 5 days of correction. It always has, and it always will.
