Knauf Insulation vs Generic Mineral Wool: A Procurement Manager's Total Cost Comparison

Last year, I went back to a loft project from 2022. The insulation rolls were still there. The energy bill was worse than we projected. When I opened the hatch and looked closely, the problem was obvious: gaps between rolls, a few compressed edges, and one section where someone had wedged an offcut into a space that deserved a full roll. It was not the installer. It was my purchasing decision.

So here is the framework I used. Four dimensions: headline price, installation and waste, thermal reliability under real conditions, and hidden costs. Each dimension gets a direct comparison. No 'depends' weasel words.

Dimension 1: Sticker Price vs Price per Installed Square Metre

On the shelf, the budget roll wins. In January 2025, I looked at a 100mm loft roll from a UK builders merchant. The knauf insulation roll was about 11% more expensive per pack than the unbranded alternative. That sounds like a clear answer. What I mean is that price per square metre is not the same as price per installed square metre. If a roll is wider or narrower than your joist spacing, you end up trimming, wedging, and throwing away material. The waste becomes part of the unit cost. The point is, the small saving disappeared in wasted offcuts.

Knauf Insulation UK publishes lambda values on its technical datasheets. For the loft roll I specified most recently, the declared lambda was 0.032 W/mK (Knauf Insulation UK technical datasheet, accessed January 2025). The generic roll in the same comparison listed a lambda of 0.044 W/mK, when it listed one at all.

That difference does not sound huge. In a U-value calculation, it is the difference between passing and failing. Per UK Building Regulations Part L (2022 edition), the target U-value depends on your element and project type. Verify the current requirements at gov.uk because they can change.

Dimension 4: Hidden Costs That Show Up Later

Hidden costs are where my job gets interesting. The budget roll might save £200 on a project. Then the crew arrives on Tuesday because the cheap supplier delivered late. Then someone realises the roll does not match the joist spacing and has to buy extra. Then the air pressure test fails because the insulation is compressed. Now that £200 saving is a £1,200 problem.

I look at other purchases the same way. Part of me wants to write 'buy the named brand and move on'. Another part knows there are good non-branded rolls too. The deciding factor is not the logo. It is the information that comes with the product.

If a product has a declared lambda value, a BBA certificate, a coverage chart, and a technical contact, compare it fairly. If it only has a cheap price and a warehouse photo, you are not buying insulation. You are buying a roll of risk.

I have mixed feelings about branded premiums. On one hand, they feel like paying for a name. On the other, I have seen how much it costs when the data is missing. I reconcile that by checking the data first. If it is not there, the product is not cheaper at all.

Which One Should You Choose?

Choose a Knauf insulation roll if you need a clear U-value calculation, your installer expects consistent widths, or you want technical support before and after delivery. Choose it if you are claiming a grant or need paperwork for building control.

Choose an unbranded roll if you are doing temporary acoustic damping in a non-habitable space, the budget is truly fixed, you can inspect the product physically, and you have an installer experienced enough to handle variations.

For a house, an occupied building, or any project you will have to live with, I would not choose the generic option. Not because it is generic. Because the information gap is the real cost.

If you search for 'knauf-insulation' on a merchant site, you will see rolls, slabs, and acoustic products. The brand name matters less than the technical data behind each option. Use the comparison framework above, and the choice usually becomes obvious.

That is the comparison. Four dimensions, one conclusion: price per roll is an entry ticket, not a final bill. If you are still buying by lowest cost per square metre, you are probably spending more than you need somewhere else.
