In March 2024, a contractor called me at 4:30 on a Tuesday afternoon. His loft insulation had just failed a building control inspection, and the re-inspection was booked for 7 AM the next morning. He had 26 unopened rolls of glass wool insulation stacked in the client's driveway — wrong product, wrong thickness, and zero chance of a delivery fitting the deadline.
We fixed it. Or rather, we fixed it at 11 PM, after a 50-mile round trip in my van, a £140 same-day courier for the correct rolls, and two of us crawling through a roof void on our knees with headtorches. The inspector signed off at 7:10 AM. The client never knew how close it was.
The contractor absorbed about £800 of extra cost on a job he'd already quoted too tight. And here's the part that still bothers me: none of it was the product's fault.
In my role coordinating emergency insulation deliveries, I've handled more than a hundred of these callouts over twelve years. Same story almost every time: a good product, a wrong decision, a big bill.
The Problem People Think They Have
When someone calls in a panic, they assume it's a product problem. "This insulation is rubbish." "The glass wool doesn't perform like it used to." They've done the research — read the reviews, compared the prices, bought what they thought was right. And it still went wrong.
So they go looking for a different product. A better brand. A thicker roll. Something with a shinier spec sheet.
The insulation was never the problem.
The Real Problem: We Compare the Wrong Number
Here's something suppliers don't put in their marketing: the entire insulation retail market is organized around price per pack. Every website sorts by it. Every spreadsheet compares by it. And it tells you almost nothing about whether the thing will do the job it was bought for.
Knauf Insulation is a good example, because their range is so broad. There are glass mineral wool rolls, rigid boards, acoustic slabs, and loose-fill products. They all "insulate." They all look similar in a tiny product thumbnail. None of them are interchangeable.
A Knauf glass wool insulation loft roll is engineered for cold lofts and rafter spaces. An acoustic slab is engineered for party walls and sound absorption. Both use the same base material — glass mineral wool — but the density, the structure, and the thermal characteristics are different. Put the wrong one in the wrong cavity and you get a room that's technically "insulated" but still cold.
What most people don't realize is that the product spec, not the brand and not the price, determines 90% of success. Four details matter:
- The product type — a roll, board, or slab matched to the building element
- The thickness — matched to your heat-loss calculation, not the label on the shelf
- The coverage — from the datasheet, matched to the actual measured area
- The roll width — it has to fit your joist spacing, and this is the one nobody checks
Get any of those wrong and a perfectly good product fails. Not "kind of underperforms." Fails.
What Saving Sixty Pounds Actually Costs
I once quoted a project for a guy who spent half the conversation showing me his forged carbon fiber phone case. Six hundred pounds for a phone case because it looked "aggressive." Then he tried to save £80 by downgrading the insulation spec on his 6,000-square-foot workshop.
The phone case will be obsolete in two years. The insulation is still cutting his heating bill.
That's the mindset issue I keep seeing: visible spending feels good, invisible spending feels wasteful — even when the invisible thing pays you back every single month.
Let me put some numbers to it. Take a typical 3-bedroom loft: about 50 square meters of floor area. The standard detail is a 100mm layer between the joists and a second layer above. Based on prices I've seen from UK suppliers in late 2024, the gap between a sensible product — say, the Knauf Insulation Loft Roll 44, which has one of the most detailed coverage documents I've used — and the cheapest roll on the shelf is roughly £60 to £80 per project.
Sixty pounds. That's the amount people lose sleep over.
Then a delivery arrives with the wrong width, the job stalls for a day, and two builders stand around at £300 a day combined. Or the inspection fails and a repeat visit costs more than the insulation did. Or the tenant moves into a cold flat three months later and I get the 8 AM call that becomes a full strip-out. I've seen all three, more times than I can count.
I don't have hard data on what percentage of failures trace back to a price-based decision — I wish I'd tracked that properly. What I can say anecdotally, from over a hundred emergency callouts: it's at least seven out of ten.
And yes, I've made the same mistake myself. Last year I skipped the final spec review on a small order because I was behind on another job and "what are the odds." The email specified a 455mm roll for 600mm joist centers. The supplier delivered exactly what I asked for. It cost me £550 in courier fees and a half-day of fixing my own oversight.
The Fix Is Boring (and Cheap)
Nobody makes a documentary about buying insulation correctly. The entire improvement is five minutes of reading a datasheet before you place the order. That's it.
- Measure the actual loft area. Not the footprint of the house. The loft floor. Length times width, including the eaves if you plan to insulate them.
- Read the coverage figure. Knauf publishes the coverage for the Loft Roll 44 and every glass wool product — square meters per pack at each thickness. Divide your area by that number and round up.
- Decide thickness from your target U-value, which your building control officer or project spec will define. The product label can't tell you what your project needs.
- Check the roll width against your joist spacing. This single check would have prevented half the callouts I've been on.
- Compare price last, and only per square meter at the thickness you actually need.
Total cost of ownership sounds like a conference term, but it's really just this: a day of site time costs more than insulation does. An inspection fee costs more than a spec sheet does. A callback costs more than both — and it costs your reputation.
One honest note on brand: I do tend to reach for Knauf's Ecose glass wool when a project has sustainability targets, because the low-carbon binder is a real difference. But it's a tiebreaker, not a substitute for getting the spec right.
Focus Is Part of the Job
One more thing, because this industry runs on distracted people and I include myself in that sentence. A few years ago I was waiting on a stock alert for a large order and caught myself refreshing the same three supplier pages all morning. I genuinely searched "how to block websites on chrome" so I'd stop wasting time and actually do the coverage math instead.
That's not a joke. In this line of work, distraction isn't an inconvenience. It's a line-item cost.
You can tell an experienced insulation crew by one habit: they do the desk work before the buying decision, not after the failure. Whether you're the one holding the spreadsheet or the one in a scally cap at 7 AM in an unheated loft with a tape measure, the sequence is the same.
Measure first. Spec second. Price third.
If you skip the first two, the third will cost you regardless.
