I've been buying insulation for a living for six years. I've managed a material budget of around $180,000 a year—maybe $220,000 in a heavy year, I'd have to check—and I've tracked every order in a cost system that has too many tabs. One warning: blown-in requires a machine, two people, and some patience. If it's a one-person DIY weekend, the machine rental and cleanup might make batts a better deal even in a messy attic. That's the kind of trade-off I mean. Total cost, not sticker price.
Scenario 2: The clean, open attic floor
New construction or a stripped attic with regular 16-inch or 24-inch centers? Give me Knauf EcoBatts with ECOSE. They cut clean, they fit, and one installer can cover a lot of floor without a blower. Faced batts also give you a vapor retarder in one step if your code requires it. That's a small thing until you're standing on studs at 7 p.m. trying to finish before inspection.

Scenario 3: The attic you're converting into a room
This is the one people get wrong the most. When an attic is going to become living space, the roof becomes an exterior wall. That means insulation has to stand up in vertical or sloped rafter bays, maintain a ventilation channel, and hold its shape against gravity. A fluffy batt will sag over time. It's not the brand—it's the product form.
Use a semi-rigid or rigid board product designed for roof applications. Knauf's board lineup is built for this. It's more expensive per square foot than batts. But the only honest comparison is between a used, finished attic with a proper assembly and one that fails five years later. Once the drywall is up, no one wants to hear “we should have used board.”
How to tell which scenario you're in

- Is the attic open and regular? Batts are probably your easiest, lowest-cost install.
- Is it full of obstacles, weird angles, or old insulation? Go blown-in.
- Is this a finished space? Go with boards. Stop reading.
- Who is doing the work? If you can't run a blower machine or don't have another person, batts might win even in an awkward attic.
- What will the finished project be judged on? Comfort, sound, and energy use—not the brand sticker.
